OpenAI Launches Sora: New AI-Powered Short-Video Platform to Rival TikTok
OpenAI has announced Sora, a new AI-powered short-form video platform built on its Sora 2 model, pitched as a rival to TikTok. The service enables users to generate video and audio content directly, with the feed dominated by AI-generated content and clips currently capped at 10 seconds. Sora 2 can also create synchronized audio and, when the optional verification feature is enabled, generate videos using a user’s likeness, with automatic notifications if their image appears in Cameos or Remixes.
According to Wired, the platform will block certain restricted categories of content, highlighting ongoing copyright governance questions as rights holders may need to opt out to prevent their works from being used in Sora 2’s training process. For now, Sora is available only in the US and Canada on iOS devices and invite-only, a strategy OpenAI says will help it refine moderation and operations before broader scaling. Observers see the launch as a move to capitalise on AI-driven social entertainment while navigating heightened scrutiny around TikTok in the US.
