Southeast Asian cybercrime now a global industry costing $100bn annually

Southeast Asian cybercriminal syndicates have transformed into a significant global force, transitioning from regional crime to industrial-scale operations. With an estimated cost of $88 billion to $114 billion in 2025 for Southeast Asian economies, the report highlights the role of corruption, advanced technologies (cryptocurrency, encrypted messaging, AI, and satellite internet), and the structure of transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) in facilitating this growth.

This industrialization of cybercrime allows for specialization in services like data theft, malware, and money laundering, reinforcing international crime networks and involving victims from over 80 countries. The UNODC emphasizes that combating this ecosystem requires coordinated action across the various enabling technologies and acknowledges that local law enforcement's failure to adapt has exacerbated the crisis.
