ChatGPT Reaches 800 Million Weekly Users, Cementing Dominance in Generative AI Adoption
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT’s weekly active users have officially surpassed 800 million, setting a new global record for generative AI adoption announced by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at the annual DevDay conference in San Francisco. Altman noted that in 2023 OpenAI had around two million developers and roughly 100 million weekly active users, while today those figures have risen to four million developers and 800 million users.
The OpenAI API now processes over six billion tokens per minute, underscoring how generative AI has become a foundational element of both daily life and industry innovation. Altman also unveiled new developer tools, including the “Apps SDK” and “AgentKit,” designed to help developers build applications and autonomous agents atop ChatGPT and OpenAI’s models.
Industry analysts view these announcements as marking OpenAI’s strategic shift toward platformising ChatGPT, turning it from a single product into an open ecosystem for AI development, with a further enterprise-focused roadmap hinted for the coming weeks.
