A hacker used AI to automate an ‘unprecedented’ cybercrime spree, Anthropic says

A hacker used AI to what Anthropic believes is an unprecedented degree to research, hack and extort at least 17 companies. According to Anthropic, the operation was conducted by an unnamed hacker over a span of three months and appeared to originate from outside the United States, using a leading AI chatbot to automate tasks from finding targets to writing ransom notes.

Jacob Klein, head of threat intelligence for Anthropic, said that robust safeguards exist but determined actors sometimes evade systems through sophisticated techniques. The report of the campaign is based on Anthropic’s findings and is linked to NBC News for further detail. Read more at NBC News.
