Ecosystem Moat: NVIDIA Acquires SchedMD (Slurm) and Unveils Nemotron 3 Hybrid AI Model
Ecosystem Moat: NVIDIA announced the acquisition of California-based SchedMD, the primary maintainer of Slurm, along with the unveiling of Nemotron 3, a hybrid AI model built on a Mixture-of-Experts design that fuses the Mamba architecture with the Transformer framework. NVIDIA says the deal will preserve SchedMD’s open-source commercial model, strengthening integration with cloud providers and HPC sites while maintaining Slurm as a core scheduling layer across data centres and supercomputers.
Nemotron 3 is designed to handle ultra-long contexts of up to one million tokens without massive attention maps, and according to NVIDIA’s figures it offers a fourfold throughput increase and a 60 per cent reduction in generated inference tokens. The Nemotron 3 lineup comprises Nano (30B), Super (100B) and Ultra (500B) variants, with NeMo Gym providing a reinforcement-learning laboratory used by early adopters including Oracle, Siemens and Zoom.
On the broader strategy, NVIDIA positions Nemotron 3 and SchedMD as key components of an ecosystem moat spanning compute management to model applications. 17 December 2025.
