DATA from 1,894 cases relating to South Korea’s Raon heavy-ion accelerator has been confirmed as having been transferred outside the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), which operates the facility. The accelerator was built with a reported state budget of 1.5 trillion Korean won.
IBS told the office of Park Jeong-ha, a People Power Party lawmaker on the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, that the material was believed to include administrative and research documents connected with Raon.
The suspected source is identified only as “A”, a former team leader responsible for device management in the Heavy Ion Accelerator Construction and Establishment Business Unit. A left the institute in July 2022, and the leak is estimated to have occurred that year. IBS reportedly confirmed the external transfer on 11 August, but had remained unaware of it for more than four years.
