Cybercrime group accessed Google Law Enforcement Request System (LERS)

Google confirmed that threat actors gained access to its Law Enforcement Request System (LERS) by creating a fake account, a move it subsequently shut down. LERS is a secure online portal for verified government agencies to submit and track legal requests for user data. The cybercrime group “Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters” claimed on Telegram to have obtained access to Google’s LERS platform and the FBI’s eCheck background check system.

Google said the fraudulent account was created and disabled, and that no requests were made with it and no data was accessed. The incident highlights the risk that unauthorized access to LERS could expose user data, compromise investigations, and damage trust in the systems, underscoring the need for strong safeguards around these highly sensitive portals. according to DataBreaches website
