Wine 10.15: A Major Step Towards Faster Windows Gaming on Linux
Wine 10.15 has been released, described as a major step towards faster Windows gaming on Linux and the foundation for playing Windows games on SteamOS. According to Daily CyberSecurity, the update includes several highlights: the Unicode character table is now at version 17.0.0, Zip64 option support has been added to the packaging service, and a range of bugs has been fixed, alongside preliminary testing of the NTSYNC driver for synchronization.
The NTSYNC driver, introduced in Linux Kernel 6.14, is designed to emulate Windows NT synchronization primitives to enable true Windows NT–style coordination within Linux kernel modules, translating into significantly improved performance for Windows NT software and games on Linux. Although Wine does not yet fully support NTSYNC, its inclusion signals active testing and the likelihood of future integration that could yield substantial performance gains.
The project’s roadmap points to a major milestone next year with the release of Wine 11, which will in turn allow Valve to roll out Proton 11, delivering enhanced compatibility within SteamOS.
