Google’s Artemis Faces Open-Source Attribution Dispute Over Code

Google’s Android automation project, Artemis, has been accused of breaching open-source licence requirements by the team behind mobile-use. Minitap says Artemis reused code released under the Apache 2.0 licence but failed to preserve the required attribution and copyright information. The licence permits reuse, modification and redistribution, subject to conditions including retaining applicable notices and documenting changes.

According to Minitap, early versions of an Artemis TOML configuration file identified the mobile-use version and its original authors. Later replacement versions in Google’s repository reportedly removed those names and attributed the code to different individuals. Minitap raised the matter in GitHub issue 40 and requested a direct link to mobile-use, restoration of the relevant copyright and attribution details, and a complete list of contributors. The team also submitted pull request 76 to restore the information.

The report says Google subsequently added a statement to the Artemis README acknowledging that the project contains source code developed by Minitap. However, issue 40 remains open, pull request 76 has not been merged, and no Google team response or review of the proposed changes was reported.
