Tearing Down the Wall: Google Brings AirDrop Support to the Pixel 9

According to Android Authority, Google is advancing cross‑platform file synchronization by bringing AirDrop support to the Pixel 9 via enhanced Quick Share functionality. The feature, originally planned for the Pixel 10, surfaced in the Pixel 9 series’ experimental firmware, suggesting Google intends to offer this interoperability to a broader Pixel audience. In the latest Android Canary build (version ZP11.251212.007), developers discovered revised Quick Share protocols necessary for data transmission to iPhones.

The discovery indicates foundational groundwork for the Pixel 9, with no current deployment for the Pixel 8 or mid‑range Pixel 9a, and the feature appears optimised for hardware powered by the Tensor G4 processor. Analysts speculate activation could coincide with the Android 16 QPR3 quarterly update or be deferred until Android 17’s full release; Qualcomm has publicly welcomed the development, stating it cannot wait to see users activate the feature on Snapdragon‑powered devices.
