The End of Offline Era: Microsoft Kills Phone Activation After 24 Years
Microsoft has confirmed that its telephone activation service was terminated on 3 December 2025, marking the end of a 24-year offline era for Windows and Office licensing. The traditional offline activation flow—where an installation ID was generated on an offline machine and a confirmation ID was retrieved via a phone call—has given way to an online portal at aka[.]ms/aoh, which now handles activation for Windows, Office and various enterprise editions such as Windows Server.
The new process requires at least one internet-enabled device to access the portal, even though the underlying activation steps on the target device can still involve offline elements, such as generating the installation ID on an air-gapped machine and then entering a code retrieved from the web.
Digital entitlement activation has become the norm, with activation utilities like MAS described as more efficient for everyday consumers; however, enterprise customers who rely on MAK keys must navigate online activation from an external environment when air-gapped or restricted networks are in place.
