A cyberattack has taken much of the International Meteor Organization’s (IMO) website offline, according to a notice published by the organisation. The IMO, described as the leading international body for tracking meteors, said the incident dealt “a critical blow” to its ageing infrastructure. Its website is currently displaying a static message while recovery work takes place.
The organisation expects several weeks of partial downtime as it moves to new infrastructure and services, with website features being restored gradually. The IMO said it has prioritised bringing back its fireball reporting system, which is now available for submissions. In the meantime, it has continued sharing meteor and asteroid tracking information through its Facebook page. The report provides no details about the attack method, whether data was accessed or stolen, or who was responsible.
