JFL Lost Up to $800,000 Weekly After Cyberattack, CEO Says No Patient or Staff Data Was Compromised
According to Virgin Islands Consortium, JFL Hospital lost between $750,000 and $800,000 a week after a cyberattack that struck the Juan F. Luis Hospital in April, forcing the facility offline for nearly five months and triggering a complete rebuild of its technology infrastructure. JFL’s chief executive, Darlene A. Baptiste, said no personal data belonging to patients or staff was stolen during the breach.
The attack occurred on 26 April and disrupted electronic billing, forcing staff to switch to manual paper billing and delaying cash flow as the hospital operated in a largely offline state. The hospital’s IT team later described the attackers’ access as stemming from two local servers, exploiting an overlooked vulnerability, likening it to a “doggy door” that was not adequately protected. Ms Baptiste emphasised during a town hall that while revenue was severely affected, the data itself did not appear to be compromised.
