Android Behind Closed Doors: Google Ends Quarterly AOSP Code Drops in 2026

On 8 January 2026, Google announced a shift in how AOSP source code is released, ending the quarterly code drops after this year. The company plans a biannual cadence for AOSP updates, with public releases limited to the second and fourth quarters.

In practice, Google will continue deploying updates to Pixel devices during the first and third quarters, but the source code for those interim versions will remain private until they are consolidated into the Q2 and Q4 cycles, creating a three-month latency before public access. The move is intended to reduce branching pressures and allow Google to focus its development on a single, more stable trunk.

It is expected to affect the third‑party ROM community, including LineageOS, which may struggle to synchronise with low-level optimisations introduced in Q1 and Q3. Nevertheless, security updates will continue to be distributed monthly via a dedicated security branch to ensure critical vulnerabilities are remediated without interruption.
