No we didn’t warn all Gmail users about imminent digital doom, says Google
Google pushed back on sensational claims that it issued a broad warning to all Gmail users about a major security issue, saying in a blog post that the story was false and that it did not issue such a warning. The article notes that in June Google was compromised by a group it calls UNC6040, also widely known as ShinyHunters, which targets companies using Salesforce and uses voice phishing to obtain credentials.
It cites Google as saying that the data retrieved was limited to basic, publicly available business information, and that the company had notified all users by 8 August. Some coverage suggested that 2.5 billion users were at risk, but the piece emphasises that Google denies sending any emergency warning and argues that most users were not at greater risk than before. The article adds that Google’s protections reportedly block more than 99.9% of phishing and malware attempts from reaching users.
