Marquis Data Breach Impacts Over 780,000 People
Marquis Data Breach Impacts Over 780,000 People shows how hackers breached the fintech firm’s network, stealing personal and financial information from more than 780,000 individuals. The incident was discovered on 14 August, but the investigation into the stolen data did not conclude until the end of October. Last week Marquis began sending written notification letters to the affected individuals and filed data breach notices with Attorney General’s Offices in several US states.
According to Marquis, the hackers accessed files containing personal details such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and taxpayer identification numbers, as well as financial information including account numbers and credit/debit card numbers. Based on filings, roughly 788,000 individuals have been affected. Marquis is providing free credit monitoring and identity protection services for one or two years.
The company says the intrusion occurred through the exploitation of a SonicWall firewall vulnerability, and no information on the threat actor has been shared, though security researchers have linked Akira ransomware activity to SonicWall exploits in August and September.
