Next-Gen AirPods: Apple Developing H3 Chip and Camera-Equipped Pro Model for Vision Pro Integration

On 13 October 2025, reports say Apple is shifting its internal development toward a next-generation H3 chip and a camera-equipped Pro model for Vision Pro integration, following the launch of AirPods Pro 3 last month which retained the H2 chip.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, the new H3 chip is expected to power future high-end in-ear headphones and focus on reducing audio latency, improving sound fidelity, and shortening response times for real-time interactions such as voice commands and instant translation. The article also notes a special edition AirPods Pro 3 slated for release next year featuring an infrared camera to capture environmental data for integrated use with iPhone and Vision Pro.

Earlier speculation from 2024 by Ming-Chi Kuo and a related patent filed in June this year describe camera-enabled AirPods capable of gesture recognition, distance sensing and wear detection. Analysts suggest that the combined capabilities may push AirPods beyond audio accessories toward intelligent environmental sensing, especially when paired with the Apple Intelligence framework across Vision Pro and iPhone.

The piece also mentions AirPods 5 in development, with both standard and mid-tier models, potentially arriving in 2026 alongside the camera-enabled AirPods Pro.
