WhatsApp Implements Passkey System to Boost Backup Privacy

WhatsApp has announced a security upgrade that introduces passkey-encrypted backups, removing the need to manage complex passwords or long encryption keys. Users can now protect their backups using their device’s biometric or security features—fingerprint, face recognition, or a screen lock code—rather than memorising credentials. The company notes that end-to-end encryption for chat backups remains in place, with the added benefit that backups are more user-friendly to access and manage.

The rollout will be gradual over the coming weeks and months to ensure system stability and gather user feedback. Enabling the feature is described as straightforward: Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup. WhatsApp says this marks a further evolution of its security approach, pairing robust encryption with convenient authentication to protect memories such as photos, voice notes, and conversations in backups. The announcement underscores WhatsApp’s ongoing commitment to encrypted communications across the platform.
