iPhone’s Off-Grid Future: Maps, Photos, & ‘Natural Usage’ Satellite Features Revealed
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple is actively developing a range of new iPhone satellite connectivity features that aim to extend beyond the current Emergency SOS via Satellite. The report notes several next-generation capabilities, including Apple Maps Satellite Navigation, which could enable navigation via satellite signals in areas with no cellular or Wi‑Fi coverage, potentially involving satellite transmission of map data.
It also describes Satellite Photo Messaging, allowing photos to be sent over satellite, and a feature called Natural Usage designed to make satellite connections seamless even indoors, in vehicles, or when stored in pockets. The 2026 iPhone lineup is expected to broaden 5G NTN support, while Apple plans a Satellite API Framework to let third‑party apps optionally integrate satellite connectivity.
The piece also states that there are no plans to enable voice or video calls or web browsing via satellite, and notes Apple’s ongoing free satellite services for older models with a one-year extension, alongside discussions about future paid access and the potential involvement of Globalstar, for which Apple has invested $1.1 billion; Gurman speculates SpaceX could accelerate upgrades if it were to acquire Globalstar. 10 November 2025.
