A New Mexico court has ordered Meta to pay $942 million due to the harm caused to children on its platforms, Facebook and Instagram. The ruling combines a civil penalty of $375 million and a $567 million fund to address damage related to mental health risks and child exploitation. The court criticized Meta for misleading consumers about safety, particularly concerning minors. Meta plans to appeal the decision.
Additionally, the court imposed specific obligations on Meta, such as enhancing age verification tools and safeguarding personal data of users under 13. Meta is also facing numerous other lawsuits regarding similar issues.
