IDC names Microsoft a leader in enterprise endpoint security
Microsoft has announced that IDC MarketScape has named it a Leader in the 2026 Worldwide Modern Endpoint Security for Enterprises vendor assessment.
The firm highlights three strengths it says matter most in current endpoint security: autonomous attack disruption and predictive shielding that can contain ransomware and identity attacks in minutes at scale; agentic AI via Security Copilot now generally available with measured gains in alert accuracy and analyst time saved; and broad native cross‑platform coverage with sovereignty and data‑residency options for regulated and multinational customers. The IDC MarketScape report is referenced as Doc US54123526, issued in September 2026.
The post also sets out how Microsoft Defender delivers protection that acts while an attack unfolds, noting automatic disruption of compromised devices and signals from endpoints, identities, email and cloud to recognise multistage attacks. It cites a concrete example with QNET, a global direct‑selling company, where Defender identified an active ransomware attack, isolated the compromised device, and stopped the second‑stage payload within 128 seconds of the first high‑severity alert.
The article also describes the Defender foundation for agentic security, emphasising three interoperating layers—signals, context and actuators—plus a unified ISOC since 23 September 2026 that combines SIEM with Defender threat protection. It notes Defender now provides over 200 native endpoint event types and that Microsoft Sentinel offers more than 500 connectors to ingest data, enabling cross‑signal correlation and investigation. The piece also highlights the introduction of local AI agents and advises buyers to scrutinise how vendors secure AI on the endpoint.
