The End of an Era? Samsung Rumored to Discontinue All SATA SSD Production

According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, Samsung is preparing to gradually wind down its SATA-based solid-state drive business, with a formal announcement expected in January 2026 while existing contracts are honoured in full. The tip-offs come from multiple Samsung distributors and retailers who allegedly corroborated the message, and who were reportedly notified in advance. A separate report also alleges that Samsung has raised DDR5 memory prices by as much as 60%.

The market for SATA SSDs has been contracting as M.2 drives become smaller and faster, yet SATA remains important in less developed regions and legacy PCs. IfSamsung implements a comprehensive exit, it would constrain supply and likely drive up prices for existing SATA SSDs, with knock-on effects on M.2 prices as well. At the time of writing, Samsung has not issued an official statement on the matter.
