MICROSOFT has integrated a cloud-recovery feature into Windows 11 that uses the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to connect to the internet, download the latest installation image from Microsoft and reinstall the operating system. The process is intended for computers suffering critical failures and removes the need for a second computer, USB installation media or manual BIOS boot changes.
The article stresses that cloud recovery restores the system but does not back up personal data. Users with important files should extract them first using a Preinstallation Environment (PE) system, and may need their BitLocker recovery key if the system drive is encrypted. It recommends keeping a rescue USB drive available: a 4GB drive can hold a fallback WePE system, while a 16GB drive can also store a Windows 11 image for offline reinstallation.
A Windows Insider preview build, identified through Microsoft’s release notes as build 26340.9502, adds two erase options. The standard removal option is intended for users keeping the computer, while “remove and clean” is designed for resale or reassignment. The article says the latter uses hardware-level wiping to remove drive data before reinstalling Windows, although it provides no independent evidence or further technical qualification for that claim.
