Meta Shifts Real Name Policy: Facebook Groups Now Allow Custom Nicknames & Avatars
Meta has shifted its long-standing real-name policy in Facebook Groups, allowing members to adopt custom nicknames and dedicated avatars when participating in discussions, without being forced to reveal their real names or post anonymously. According to Meta, the feature is straightforward to use: members can set a custom nickname through the same toggle used for creating anonymous posts.
However, this option is not enabled platform-wide by default and nicknames must be activated by individual group administrators, with some cases potentially requiring manual approval. Once enabled, users may switch between their real name and their chosen nickname within that group. The nicknames must still comply with Meta’s community standards and terms of service, and users can select from a set of themed avatars—currently largely consisting of charming animals wearing sunglasses.
Groups are increasingly a strategic focus for Meta as it seeks to regain relevance among younger audiences, using semi-anonymous, username-style participation to reduce social friction and encourage engagement.
