Authorities Dismantle Large-Scale Credit Card Fraud Scheme Affecting 4.3 Million Users

Authorities across nine countries executed a coordinated crackdown on one of the largest credit card fraud networks ever dismantled. Operation Chargeback, led by German prosecutors and the Bundeskriminalamt, brought down criminal organisations responsible for defrauding over 4.3 million cardholders globally. The investigation, which began in December 2020, resulted in 18 arrest warrants and more than 60 house searches, with damages exceeding EUR 300 million and attempted fraud surpassing EUR 750 million.

Between 2016 and 2021, the network allegedly created about 19 million fraudulent online subscriptions on platforms designed to evade detection, often using unobtrusive monthly charges of around EUR 50. The suspects allegedly exploited four major German payment service providers and used shell companies mainly registered in the United Kingdom and Cyprus to hide activities.

According to Europol, the operation underscored how cross-border cooperation can dismantle sophisticated criminal infrastructure spanning multiple countries and affecting millions of victims.
