Rust Code Delivers Better Security, Also Streamlines DevOps
Rust adoption is being linked to tangible security and productivity gains, with the article noting memory-safe Rust code delivering about 1,000 times fewer bugs than C++, and faster throughput in the DevOps pipeline, according to data just released by Google's Android development team. It also reports that the improved pipeline metrics came as a surprise, and that interoperability allows organisations to replace portions of C and C++ code with Rust gradually rather than rewriting everything.
Google has updated the Android Linux kernel to support Rust, and the first production driver is now written in Rust, alongside Rust-based replacements for parsers of file types such as PNG and JSON. The piece highlights momentum beyond Google, including Microsoft’s public Rust adoption for Windows drivers and Cloudflare’s rebuilt core using Rust, which the vendor says yielded a 25% performance boost and faster feature deployment.
It also cites Google's 2025 data showing median review time for Rust changes is 25% less than for similar changes in C++, and a rollback rate lower than for C++, underscoring quality gains. Overall, analysts quoted emphasise that Rust’s benefits extend beyond memory safety, with a strategic, island-by-island approach preferred by many organisations.
