AI Chatbot Exploited as a Backdoor to Access Sensitive Data and Infrastructure
Generative AI chatbots are being weaponised as backdoors that could grant attackers direct access to sensitive data and infrastructure, the article explains using a fictional mid-sized financial services firm, FinOptiCorp, and its FinBot chatbot as an example. Attackers began by posing as regular users and, during routine interactions, triggered an unhandled exception that disclosed FinBot’s data ingestion details and its Python-based framework, exposing sensitive implementation data in line with OWASP risks.
They then carried out an indirect prompt injection by posting a crafted customer review on a third‑party forum that FinBot routinely parsed for sentiment analysis, which forced the chatbot to reveal its system prompt and internal utilities.
With that knowledge, the attackers accessed a higher-privilege internal summarisation API—lacking proper authorisation checks—and retrieved raw customer records containing personally identifiable information and financial data, before progressing laterally to uncover configuration files containing API keys, database credentials, and access tokens.
The breach underscores the need for a multi‑layered security approach across the AI lifecycle, including early vulnerability detection, strict prompt handling, and robust API and credential protection.
