Astro is joining Cloudflare
Astro, the creators of the Astro web framework, is joining Cloudflare, according to The Cloudflare Blog, with Astro remaining open source under MIT licence and open to contributions as part of Cloudflare. Astro 6 is on the horizon, bringing a redesigned development server powered by Vite, and the first public beta release of Astro 6 is now available, with GA expected in the weeks ahead.
The update notes that Astro will continue to power sites across platforms such as Webflow Cloud and Wix Vibe, and that Cloudflare uses Astro for developer docs, website, and landing pages. Astro 6 introduces a new local development server that runs code locally in the same runtime as production, using the Cloudflare Vite plugin, workerd, and bindings like Durable Objects, D1, KV and Agents. There’s also mention of Live Content Collections, stabilised in Astro 6, enabling real-time data updates without a rebuild.
All full-time Astro employees have transferred to Cloudflare, and Cloudflare remains committed to open-source contributions through the Astro Ecosystem Fund and ongoing governance.
