The Hype Hangover: Dell Admits Consumers Aren’t Buying the “AI PC” Narrative

Dell has admitted that for the vast majority of consumers, artificial intelligence remains insufficient to drive purchases, despite ongoing efforts to embed Neural Processing Units and on-device inferencing. Reports suggest a disconnect between the industry’s “AI PC” marketing and the practical needs of end users, who prioritise price, performance, battery longevity and reliability.

At CES 2026, Dell pivoted the XPS line towards portability and durability, with the XPS insignia replacing the Dell logo on the chassis and marketing materials de-emphasising AI functionalities. Dell still says AI will be a vital driver for future upgrade cycles, but notes that simply highlighting AI has failed to stimulate sales.

The piece argues that consumers compare tangible value and everyday usability, and that AI features tethered to cloud services or lacking strong software ecosystems offer limited perceptible benefit at present. Overall, the industry remains waiting for an AIPC trajectory to mature into a transparent, essential infrastructure rather than a buzzword.
