Sweden blocks ChatGPT and Claude on government computers
Sweden’s Government Offices have blocked access to the AI services ChatGPT and Claude for staff computers, effective from Monday. The prohibition follows a decision that employees should use AI tools that are approved by the Government Offices, with Microsoft’s Copilot singled out as an example of an approved service.
The move appears to be tied to information-security concerns, as internal notes reported by Ekot quote Digitalisation Director Mikael Wettercrantz saying that using AI services without an agreement could have “consequences for our information security.”
The report notes that the Government Offices are not alone in this approach; similar blocks have been implemented at the Swedish Tax Agency and the Swedish National Board of Institutions (Sis), with the Enforcement Service reportedly preparing a forthcoming position on the matter. Ekot’s survey is cited as evidence of broader caution within Swedish government agencies. The Sveriges Radio article linked in the piece provides additional context on the decision.
