Finally Fixed: Windows 11 “Update and Shut Down” Bug Patched After 2 Years

Microsoft has rolled out a fix for the long-standing Windows 11 “Update and Shut Down” bug in an Insider build, addressing a problem where the button previously initiated both update stages and then booted to the desktop instead of updating during shutdown and on reboot. The fix arrives with preview update KB5067036, which targets Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2; for now, the patch must be installed manually via Settings > Windows Update > Check for Updates, with a restart completing the process.

The update also includes other fixes, such as resolving installation failures with error code 0x800f0983, restoring the Media Creation Tool on Arm64 devices, and addressing issues related to text rendering, networking, DRM protection and authentication. Microsoft notes that, by November, the patch will be included in the B-class stable cumulative update for all users. The article, dated 30 October 2025, states the issue had persisted for over two years prior to this release. Users running affected builds should install KB5067036 and restart to complete the fix.
