Cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover inflicts $2.5B loss on UK economy
The security blog reports that Jaguar Land Rover’s cyberattack cost the UK economy $2.5 billion, with the incident described as the most economically damaging cyber event to date in the UK. In early September, JLR shut down systems to mitigate the attack, disrupting production and retail operations and affecting the Solihull plant, with UK dealers reporting delays in car registrations and parts supply.
JLR said there was no evidence that customer data had been stolen, while the group “Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters,” named in the piece, claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the Cyber Monitoring Centre, the incident caused a UK financial impact of £1.9 billion and affected over 5,000 UK organisations, with the event classified as a Category 3 systemic incident.
The report notes that vehicle output fell by 5,000 units per week for five weeks and that losses also cover IT rebuilding, supplier strain, and reduced sales, though no ransom or data breach losses were counted.
