Neon App pays users to record their phone calls, sells data for AI training

Neon Mobile, described by Malwarebytes as a “bizarre app” in TechCrunch, pays users to record and share their audio calls so the data can be sold to AI companies for developing and training models. The app promises payments of $0.15 per minute when you are the only Neon user in the conversation, doubling if the other end also uses the app, with a maximum of $30 per day.

Neon will sell the collected data to AI companies for the purpose of developing, training, testing and improving machine learning models and related technologies. The article notes Neon will never sell your personal data to any third party, will not knowingly collect data about children under 16, and will only record your side of the call unless it is with another Neon user.

It also highlights broad data collection and sharing practices, and cautions users to monitor policy changes and opt out if they disagree, while pointing out that deleting the app may not stop call recordings from other Neon users. according to TechCrunch
