Microsoft Finally Resolves Persistent Windows 11 ‘Update and Shut Down’ Glitch

Microsoft has announced that it has fixed the long-standing Windows 11 “update and shut down” glitch in its latest preview builds, addressing a problem that caused updates to install and reboot rather than power the machine down. According to Windows Insider preview blog, Microsoft officially acknowledged the issue on 29 September 2025, detailing Build 26220.6760 for the Dev Channel.

The company’s release notes state: “Fixed an underlying issue which could lead ‘Update and shutdown’ to not actually shut down your PC after.” Early testing in the Insider programme has shown that devices now power off properly, ending the disruptive reboot cycle that used to occur when updates were pending.

For now, those in the Dev or Beta channels can access the fix by enabling a toggle in Settings > Windows Update, while Microsoft advises non-Insiders to wait for the stable release due to risks associated with preview software. This resolution forms part of broader efforts to improve Windows Update reliability and user experience.
