Apple Discontinues Clips Video App, Removing It from App Store After Eight Years
Apple has quietly confirmed on its official support page that it has formally discontinued updates and removed its short-form video editing app, Clips, from the App Store, eight years after its 2017 launch as a lightweight tool for social video creation. The company notes that Clips is no longer available for download and new users can no longer install it, though those who previously downloaded the app may still retrieve it through their purchase history.
Apple has not specified how long Clips will remain available for redownload, leaving its future accessibility uncertain for iPhone and iPad users. The firm has advised existing users to save their videos to the Photos library or back them up elsewhere, warning that unsaved projects could be permanently lost once the app is fully retired or updates cease.
At its peak, Clips aimed to let users record, edit, and stylise videos with captions, filters and background music, but the rise of rivals and overlapping functionality with other Apple software contributed to its decline.
