OpenAI Partners with AMD, Adopting Instinct MI450 GPUs for a 6 GW AI Computing Infrastructure
OpenAI has announced a partnership with AMD to deploy AMD’s Instinct MI450 GPUs in a massive AI computing infrastructure described as up to 6 GW. The first batch of MI450 units is slated for rollout in the second half of 2026, marking the launch of the first phase of OpenAI’s 1 GW AI computing deployment.
In addition to computing hardware, the deal includes a potential equity component, with OpenAI able to purchase up to 160 million AMD shares at a symbolic price of $0.01 per share, potentially holding as much as 10% of AMD’s equity if milestones are met. The arrangement occurs amid a broader wave of collaboration, including a recent $100 billion long-term investment plan with NVIDIA to build AI data centres with a combined capacity of at least 10 GW, expected to begin deployment in late 2026.
OpenAI has also deepened ties with Microsoft, which has invested over $13 billion and holds a 49% profit-sharing stake in the company, while NVIDIA recently invested $5 billion in Intel to pursue joint AI acceleration and CPU platform development.
