Word for Windows Will Soon AutoSave Documents to OneDrive by Default, Pushing Cloud Adoption

On 9 October 2025, Word for Windows is set to begin saving documents to OneDrive by default, with AutoSave enabled automatically in the preview build. The AutoSave feature, a hallmark of Microsoft 365 applications, periodically saves new versions of a document, helping users recover work after a crash. This change relies on OneDrive, and users will see Word automatically store new documents in OneDrive unless they explicitly save locally; even local saves will still maintain a cloud copy.

OneDrive offers 5 GB of free storage by default, with options to upgrade via Microsoft 365 or by purchasing additional storage. The article notes that this strategy mirrors Microsoft’s broader push to back up files to OneDrive and that signing in with a Microsoft online account enables automatic OneDrive login and synchronization, whereas local accounts cannot bypass this in Windows 11. Additionally, Microsoft is developing a dedicated OneDrive client for Windows 11 and integrating enhanced Copilot AI capabilities.
