Apple Is Forcing Its Suppliers to Embrace Full Automation

Reports suggest that Apple is restructuring its global supply chain by demanding full-scale automation from its partners, not just shifting production away from China. According to industry sources, Apple has made robotic arms and intelligent manufacturing systems a baseline requirement, meaning suppliers must independently invest in automated production equipment to remain in Apple’s ecosystem.

This shift places the burden of automation costs on suppliers, eroding profit margins as Apple moves away from subsidising equipment investments. The move is framed as part of a long-term strategy to drive large‑scale automation across production lines and to gain greater flexibility in its global manufacturing footprint. Some observers believe it could pave the way for future iPhone assembly to return to the United States, turning “Made in America” from a political slogan into a practical reality.

Taken together, Apple is pursuing a dual strategy of enforcing automation to secure future capacity while maintaining market momentum through product innovation and brand loyalty. According to SellCell, more than 68% of U.S. iPhone users plan to upgrade immediately after the iPhone 17 is released.
