No More Public BSODs: Windows 11 Will Hide Crash Screens on Public Displays
No More Public BSODs explains that Windows 11 will hide crash screens on public displays, preserving a cleaner look for venues such as airports. When a critical failure occurs, the crash screen will remain visible for only 15 seconds before the display automatically turns black, a change aimed at public signage systems rather than regular devices.
According to Microsoft’s design, once a public display crashes and transitions to a black screen after 15 seconds, only maintenance staff reconnecting a keyboard and mouse can re-activate the display. On site, reactivating the screen will reveal diagnostic information to help identify issues such as whether a driver caused the failure or if a reboot is needed. The feature is described as limited strictly to digital signage devices and will not be enabled on standard Windows devices.
