Meta’s New AI NPCs Will Make Horizon Worlds Come to Life
Meta is once again infusing its metaverse platform, Horizon Worlds, with generative AI experiences, enabling developers to create AI-driven NPCs powered by large language models. This update, expected to roll out soon, marks a pivotal step in Horizon Worlds’ next stage of evolution. NPCs will engage in real-time voice conversations, dynamically responding to context and player behaviour, moving beyond the “cold rigidity of pre-programmed replies” to more natural, layered exchanges.
In its latest developer update, Meta showcased the Worlds Desktop Editor, allowing developers to customise character appearances, define backstories, and set interaction rules, so NPCs become characters with personality, memory and narrative motivation. Meta has already introduced AI NPCs in worlds such as Bobber Bay Fishing and Profit or Perish, demonstrating adaptive behaviour that may reveal new traits as gameplay progresses.
Published on 31 August 2025, the article notes that, with the upcoming Meta Connect conference, further details on generative AI integration within Horizon Worlds are anticipated.
