Apple Unveils iPhone Memory Protections to Combat Sophisticated Attacks
Apple has announced Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE) on its new iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, delivering always-on memory safety protection for key attack surfaces such as the kernel and more than 70 userland processes, with the devices running iOS 26. According to Apple, MIE leverages Arm’s Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (EMTE), introduced in 2022, to help block exploitation of memory safety flaws.
MIE protects the kernel, Safari, and Messages, using secure memory allocators and Tag Confidentiality Enforcement policies. After testing against known exploit chains, Apple says MIE is highly efficient at blocking attacks in their early stages and prevents threat actors from reviving exploit chains by swapping one bug for another.
Ivan Krstić of Apple described that MIE will make exploit chains significantly more expensive and difficult to develop and maintain, potentially redefining memory safety for Apple products. Google has also highlighted its own Advanced Protection mode to thwart spyware on Android, illustrating a broader industry push against sophisticated surveillance attacks.
