The Congressional Budget Office Was Hacked. It Says It Has Implemented New Security Measures

The Congressional Budget Office confirmed it had been hacked, potentially exposing important government data to malicious actors. The agency, which has about 275 employees, provides impartial analysis to support lawmakers during the budget process. Caitlin Emma, a spokeswoman, said the incident had been identified, action taken to contain it, and that additional monitoring and new security controls have been implemented to further protect the agency’s systems going forward, according to The Washington Post.

The intrusion was reportedly carried out by a suspected foreign actor, though the CBO did not confirm this. The incident is being investigated and work for the Congress continues, Emma added. The story was initially reported on the hack, with the article noting the information was derived from four anonymous sources familiar with the situation.
