Google Unveils Simple Two Word Names for Cyber Threat Actors

THE Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) has introduced a new unified naming system for tracking cyber threat actors, aimed at providing clarity and consistency. This new cryptonym-based approach assigns memorable two-word names to each threat actor—where the first word represents the actor and the second categorizes them by motivation or activity type. The initiative addresses the historically distinct tracking methods of previous organizations, aiming for simplicity and standardization across the industry. Notably, previous names will remain accessible within the Google Threat Intelligence platform as the rollout continues.
