Beyond Lobbying: Meta Creates a Super PAC to Shape AI Policy in California

Meta is reportedly preparing to establish a new Super Political Action Committee (Super PAC) named “Mobilizing Economic Transformation Across (META) California,” aimed at shaping California’s local political landscape to favour policies supportive of the technology sector, particularly AI regulation. According to Politico, the committee’s funding could reach into the tens of millions of dollars, though the exact figure remains undisclosed.

Meta’s move comes as California has advanced AI-legislation in recent years, with 2024’s digital likeness rights act and other proposals facing hurdles. The Super PAC is described as a tool to influence policy ahead of the 2026 California midterms and gubernatorial election, with aims to lean state policies towards loosening AI restrictions, according to Meta.

Brian Rice, Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy, stated: “Sacramento’s regulatory environment could stifle innovation, block AI progress, and put California’s technology leadership at risk. This is why we are launching a California super PAC.”
