Denmark ends trial of open source Collabora office suite
The Danish Agency for Digital Government has formally suspended its testing of the open‑source office suite Collabora, confirming there are no active plans to revive the project. The trial, which began in June 2025, involved a small group of civil servants evaluating Collabora’s web‑based word processing, spreadsheets and presentation editing within municipal case‑handling platforms as a potential replacement for Microsoft Office tools.
The move marks a setback for open‑source approaches in Denmark and is described as a symbolic victory for Microsoft across European public administration, where the goal of digital sovereignty often collides with practical interoperability.
During the evaluation, civil servants reported notable formatting problems, including erratic layout shifts, blank pages and unreliable revision tracking. Difficulties were also observed when converting between Collabora and proprietary Microsoft formats, with recurring layout degradation cited as a friction point. An agency spokesman indicated that officials have not published a post‑mortem detailing these defects, and continued daily public workloads were cited as a reason to pause the project.
The decision followed the spring 2026 elections, and ministers’ spokespeople confirmed the initiative ended without a formal, completed evaluation. The coverage also notes that the move came amidst broader political priorities and interoperability concerns rather than a demonstrated, scalableOpen‑source replacement for Microsoft Office.
