EA Partners with Stable Diffusion Creator to Slash Game Development Costs

EA has announced a strategic partnership with Stability AI to jointly develop transformative AI models, tools, and workflows aimed at accelerating game development while preserving visual quality, according to EA. In its initial phase, the collaboration will focus on generating in-game textures and assets and producing Physically Based Rendering materials, 2D textures that maintain accurate colour and lighting across environments.

The partners say AI-driven prompts will also pre-visualise entire 3D environments, helping artists direct creative concepts more dynamically. Steve Kestell, Technical Art Director at EA SPORTS, described the collaboration as giving artists smarter paintbrushes.

The move comes amid industry chatter that AI could expand productivity, with Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick and Krafton signalling broader ambitions in AI, while Microsoft has launched AI tooling for game creation; EA, however, is pursuing AI-assisted workflows to reduce production costs during its ongoing privatization and debt transition.
