Microsoft Teams Will Auto-Track Office Location via Wi-Fi
Microsoft Teams is set to gain a feature that detects Wi‑Fi networks to automatically update a user’s location status, with the aim of marking staff as “in the office” when they connect to the office Wi‑Fi and changing to indicate elsewhere when they switch to cellular data or another network. The update, promised for December, is described in the latest roadmap from the Microsoft 365 product team.
Acknowledging privacy concerns, the feature is opt‑in by default, with the location status initially disabled and IT administrators able to activate it from the admin console, giving employees the option to participate and share their location via Wi‑Fi detection. The capability could assist large teams in coordinating on‑site presence, though it also raises considerations about workplace monitoring.
A similar approach was previously developed by Amazon for monitoring office presence, and some employees reportedly spoofed Wi‑Fi SSIDs to bypass detection; it remains to be seen whether Microsoft Teams’ implementation will be more resilient to such workarounds. The article is dated 28 October 2025.
