The Gemini Overhaul: Google Unlocks Free AI Writing and “AI Inbox” for Gmail

Google has rolled out Gemini-powered enhancements for the general Gmail user base, after first targeting Workspace clients, bringing features from automated writing to smarter inbox management. The basic utilities are free, while the more sophisticated “intellectual” features sit behind Google AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions. Among the premium offerings, AI Overviews turns the search bar into a conversational interface, letting users ask questions in natural language and receive results sourced from their emails.

Equally notable is AI Inbox, which acts as a digital majordomo to filter noise and highlight high-priority contacts, presenting a concise briefing for quick action, with privacy protections described by Google. A new Proofread tool is also included to refine grammar and tone, alongside freely available helpers such as Help Me Write, Suggested Replies, and Thread Summarization.

Deployment is currently commencing for English-speaking users in the United States, with plans to widen language and regional support in the coming months, according to Daily CyberSecurity.
