In Other News: Iranian Ships Hacked, Verified Android Developers, AI Used in Attacks

A SecurityWeek round-up reports that a hacking group known as Lab Dookhtegan disrupted the communications of dozens of Iranian ships, according to Marine Insight. The attack affected 60 ships in total, comprising 39 tankers and 25 cargo ships operated by Iranian maritime companies NITC and IRISL, both of which are sanctioned by the United States.

By breaching the satellite communications company Fannava, the attackers allegedly disabled the central communications system named Falcon and issued destructive commands intended to erase core data, leaving the ships effectively blind and deaf.

The piece notes these developments as part of broader cyber activity under the banner of “In Other News.” The report frames the incident as a significant disruption tied to state-adjacent maritime operations, illustrating how satellite-linked networks can be leveraged to cripple critical shipping infrastructure.
