Apple’s In-House Chips Pave the Way for On-Device AI Revolution

Apple’s push to self-develop its own chips is accelerating, with the A-series and M-series lineage expanding to the Apple 16e, which debuted the company’s first proprietary 5G modem, the C1, and now the N1 wireless networking chip and the upgraded C1X 5G modem in the iPhone Air. This work, according to CNBC, aims to tighten control over hardware performance and energy efficiency while laying the groundwork for future “Apple Intelligence” on-device AI services.

In the interview, Tim Millet, Vice President of Platform Architecture, and Arun Mathias, Vice President of Wireless Technologies, emphasised that the integration of the N1 chip and the enhanced C1X modem in the iPhone Air gives Apple deeper mastery over device operation. Millet said, “That’s where the magic is. When we have control, we are able to do things beyond what we can do by buying a merchant silicon part,” linking this to the 2019 acquisition of Intel’s wireless business.

The iPhone 17 lineup remains tied to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 5G modem, while the A19 Pro processor strengthens the Neural Engine and embeds neural accelerators into GPU cores to boost on-device AI and ML inference.
